Hi! My name is Tasha and this is my story...
I am a nine year old girl. Who loves playing on swings and swimming on hot summer days, I also love playing on my trampoline and to giggle and play. But when I was born, I had many medical complications that no child should have to face. I born 6 weeks premature and stayed in hospital for six and a half months in total. Firstly when I was being born my mummy had allot of complications during my birth, when I was born my lungs were not formed well enough and I needed to go on a
ventilator. At just 3 weeks old I had a bowel resection and had it rejoined at 6 weeks old. I then suffered with hypoglycaemia which I grew out of at seven months old. I also had a blood clot on returning home and had to have clexane injections twice daily giving by my mummy. Two weeks before I finally came home, the doctors told my parents that I had Optic Nerve Hypoplasia (ONH) and Cerebal Palsy.
Mummy and Daddy were quite upset for some time, but I did not know anything different and was always so happy so they came to realise that for everything I had been through, there was no one more special than ME and if I could be a happy little girl, then my Mummy and Daddy needed to be as happy and strong as they could be for me. The doctors in Australia explained that there was no chance I would ever be able to see, but my parents never lost the hope of one day giving me the ultimate gift of sight.
Then one day, sitting back watching the news Mummy discovered a story about children going to china to receive treatment for ONH which is offered at Beike Biotech China founded by the University of Beijing, China. (www.beikebiotech.com) the course of treatment utilises umbilical cord stem cells to encourage the growth of a patients own regenerative cells. We then found out that these treatments not only offer the hope and gift of sight but can benefit patients with cerebal palsy.
Our family's goal is for Tasha to see her family and especially her mother, the one who has nurtured her through her life. Even if Tasha gets light perception then this whole experience will be worth it.
To get our family over to China and receive treatment we will require $49,000 AUD for treatment plus travel expenses, accommodation, passports and food. As a struggling family we are unable to fund this for Tasha and need to rely on the generosity of the public for support and funding. Every cent donated will bring us one step closer to giving us the opportunity to give our beautiful girl the gift of sight.
Now my Doctors would like to do test on my eye's before i go and when i get back to see how the treatment has helped me. View a story on Channel 10 here.
We greatly appreciate you taking the time to read our story and learn of the difficulties we have faced and hope that Tasha's future will be one that is bright and beautiful.
